Welcome to 3 Bears Media, a full service production company I founded in 2008. I hold a BSc degree in wildlife biology from The University of Montana and am an MFA candidate in Science and Natural History Filmmaking at Montana State University.

Trained as both a biologist and filmmaker, I am in a unique position to bring artistic imagery and creative storytelling to the scientific community. I believe there is much room for improvement in how scientific discoveries and conservation efforts are presented to the broader public. In fact, effective science communication (or lack thereof I should say) is the main reason why I have chosen a career in Natural History Filmmaking rather than biology. Don’t get me wrong, science is a wonderful thing. But so is art and personal expression. Therefore I founded 3 Bears Media in order to provide a platform for sharing stories of human relationships with nature - those steeped in animal behavior and conservation philosophy, ecology and emotion, environments and ethics.

Let me explain what 3 Bears is. At the root of the name “3 Bears” are not three bears. In fact, they are three rocks. Three sandstone rocks that serve as a landmark and memory of where I grew up - Taylor Creek in the Custer National Forest of Southeast Montana. The three bears are stately in their appearance, beautiful in their texture, and steeped with history. What makes these rocks different you may ask? Well, they stand as recorders of history, literally and figuratively. They have been shaped by the winds of time to appear like a family of bears sitting on their haunches, witnessing the changes that have taken place in this part of the country over millenia. They have observed environmental changes and they watched as Native Americans were removed from the landscape and placed on nearby reservations. They stood by as bison were replaced by horses and cattle. And they welcomed my family, five generations ago, to our home in this wonderful corner of Montana.

Many folks who have wandered past the Three Bears on their travels have taken time to sign their name, etching their legacy deep into the brittle rock. Many of these names and dates remain, including my own, my sister’s and many of our closest friends and relatives. This has not defaced the beauty of the sandrock, but instead has added to its meaning. The Three Bears stand as a capsule of history - geologic and human. The Three Bears tell the story of trappers, homesteaders, ranchers, and travelers. Silently, they have recorded tales of hardship, success, relationships, and family. They are an open book to be read, but only so briefly, while we still have the chance. Each rainstorm, hailstorm and gust of wind slowly erodes their surface, erasing their knowledge.

3 Bears Media is a conveyor of knowledge and stories of human-nature relationships. In an ever-changing world, 3 Bears Media is about conserving wildlife, environments and the people who depend on them - while we still have the chance.
